July 28 marked World Hepatitis Day and the theme this year was ‘It's time for action’. According to the World Hepatitis Report 2024, Pakistan is among 10 countries that together represent nearly two thirds of hepatitis B and C infections. Our estimated burden of disease for these two types of hepatitis is over 12 million people.
If left untreated, these infections can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer, and even death. The good news is that vaccination is available for hepatitis B and effective treatment is available for hepatitis C. On this occasion, let's commit to vaccinate, test, and treat to fight this silent hepatitis epidemic.
