A top IMF official had previously told us to raise taxes on the rich and powerful. But the fact is that the ruling clique has always burdened the salaried classes with more and more taxes while leaving the elite untouched. Regressive taxes remain the favoured tool for topping up the privileges of those at the top. Why does the IMF not push as hard for progressive taxation as it does for austerity and raising revenues in general?
