Monsoon showers continue to lash city
Karachi on Tuesday received light to heavy monsoon rains intermittently in different areas during the entire day since late Monday night, turning the city’s weather pleasant, Geo News reported.
The fresh monsoon showers accompanied by lightning and thunders hit almost all parts of the metropolis. However, Gadap, Orangi Town, Surjani Town and North Karachi were among those areas which received heavy rains.
According to the Met Office, the rain recorded in Gadap near Baqai Hospital was 42.4mm, while Orangi Town, Surjani Town and North Karachi received 29.4mm, 24.1mm and 24mm of downpours respectively.
Nazimabad received 14.6mm, Bin Qasim 12.5mm, Gulshan-e-Maymar 12.2mm, PAF Base Masroor 10mm, Keamari 6.5mm, Korangi 6.4mm, PAF Base Faisal 6mm, Jinnah Terminal 5.6mm, the Met Complex 5.1mm, the old airport area 3.5mm and DHA Phase-II) 1.2mm.
Other areas that received rain included II Chundrigar Road, Saddar, Sharea Faisal, the old city area, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Tariq Road, Malir, Quaidabad and Scheme-33 among others.
However, sporadic showers have not yet stopped in some areas amid predictions of more downpours on Wednesday across the city. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s forecast, the prevailing low-pressure system can bring moderate to heavy showers to Karachi until Thursday.
Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah ordered Karachi’s administration and KMC officials to head out into the field to deal with rain in the city.
According to the spokesman for the CM, Shah directed the officials on Tuesday to adopt immediate measures for ensuring drainage of rainwater in all cities of the province.
The staff and officials should stay in the field until the rainwater drainage is completed, he said, adding that uninterrupted work should be done for drainage on main roads and low-lying areas in the city.
The traffic police should clear the roads; there should be no traffic jams, emphasised the CM.
All administration officials should remain active, and all resources should be utilised for drainage, as per the CM’s directives. The district police and traffic police should work together to assist citizens, he said.
There should be no accumulation of rainwater on any road for too long, as per the CM’s orders.
