Naqvi set to become next ACC President

LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairperson Mohsin Naqvi is poised to become the new President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) later this year.

The current ACC President, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah, is set to step down after holding the position for three consecutive years, including a one-year extension granted in January this year.

According to sources, a recent ACC meeting discussed the possibility of Naqvi assuming the role, which will place him at the helm during several major upcoming tournaments. These include the T20I edition of the Asia Cup in 2025, to be hosted in India, and the ODI edition in Bangladesh in 2027. Additionally, Naqvi will be responsible for overseeing the organisation of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to be held in Pakistan. “When the ACC meets later this year, it will confirm that Naqvi will be the next president for a two-year term... When Jay Shah steps down, the PCB chief will take over,” a source revealed.

The transition occurs amid ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly concerning the participation of both nations in each other’s hosted events. Despite Pakistan’s participation in the 2023 ODI World Cup held in India, there remains uncertainty regarding India’s participation in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
