ISLAMABAD: The father of two missing professors on Friday approached the Supreme Court to become a party to the case related to enforced disappearances.

Qazi Habibur Rehman, father of professors Zahoorul Hassan Mashwani and Mazharul Hassan Mashwani, filed an application in the apex court, pleading to be a necessary party to the petition filed by Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan, which is currently pending with the court.

Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan had challenged the unlawful practice of enforced disappearances in the Supreme Court, arguing that it violates various articles of the Constitution.

Qazi Habibur Rehman alleged in his application that his two sons were abducted by unknown persons on June 6, 2024, from their residence in Township, Lahore, and have been missing ever since.

He said that he had approached the high court, but it did not yield any results. In the meantime, he learned about the pending petition in the Supreme Court and moved an application for an early hearing.

«Therefore, in the best interest of justice, I should also be arrayed as a necessary party to the petition filed by Aitzaz Ahsan,» he submitted.

He further submitted that the attorney general had assured the apex court that there would be no more missing persons and that the rule of law would prevail. However, he noted that even after this statement, educated young men belonging to the largest political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf, or their family members, including his two sons, were abducted without any recourse to law.

Their abduction is a question of grave concern and large public importance, and their non-recovery is an abuse of the process of law,» the applicant submitted, adding that if he is not arrayed as a necessary party and not heard effectively, the lives of his two missing sons will remain in grave danger, and their whereabouts will remain unknown. He prayed that his application be accepted, making him a party to the instant case.
