Clashes over land dispute: Jirga continues efforts to restore calm in Kurram

PARACHINAR: A jirga from Hangu and Orakzai reached the area as the firing between the two tribes over a land dispute continued for the third day in the Kurram tribal district on Friday in which 11 people have been killed and 62 others injured so far.

Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsud said the jirga members made efforts and arranged meetings with the elders from the warring tribes to effect a truce.According to the police and district administration, firing over the land dispute between tribes living in Boshehra and Malikhel areas the district continued with the use of automatic weapons. Reports suggested that incidents of firing occurred in Balishkhel, Pewar, Tiri-Mangal and Kanj Alizai areas due to which main and link roads remained closed for vehicular traffic.

Member of National Assembly Hameed Hussain said the disputes over water resources, land and forest ownership started with skirmishes and developed into severe firings in several parts of the district, which was a cause of grave concern.He said it was time for the district administration and other institutions to shoulder their responsibilities by taking action against those creating unrest in the region.
