The future of Dr Mukhtar Ahmed, chairman of the Federal Higher Education Commission, will be decided on July 27. Federal Secretary Education Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani has told The News that if the summary of Dr Mukhtar Ahmed's appointment for another term is not approved by July 27, “we will send the summary again and if the decision is still not received, we will send a new summary, requesting a member of the commission to be charged with the position of chairman”.
This is Dr Mukhtar’s second tenure, which will come an end on July 28, and according to HEC rules the third tenure cannot be given, and if the third tenure is given it will be illegal. However, this was not the second consecutive tenure of Dr Mukhtar Ahmed, as in the middle, Dr Tariq Banuri was also appointed as chairman HEC, and to remove him, the tenure of the HEC chairman was reduced from four years to two years during the Tehreek-e-Insaf period. However, Dr Tariq Banuri was successful in winning case from a court and managed to complete his four-year term. It has been a month since Dr Mukhtar Ahmed's extension summary was sent. According to the sources, the Ministry of Law has objected to his two tenures, but the fact that this is not his second consecutive tenure and the HEC Act/Ordinance is silent in this regard.
