Urban blight

Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city and economic hub, was once renowned for its natural beauty and coastal areas. Unfortunately, for many years, a systematic effort to destroy Karachi’s coastline has been underway. This process not only affects the city’s aesthetic appeal but also poses a serious threat to its wildlife and marine life. The area stretching from Gulbai Machar Colony to Hawksbay was once a haven for wildlife and marine life. Migratory birds from Siberia, including flamingos and a variety of other species, used to visit this region. These birds added to the natural beauty and helped maintain the ecological balance.

The ongoing construction near coastal areas in the name of extensions for residential plots and high rise buildings has not only altered the landscape but has also led to the destruction of natural habitats. The once pristine beaches and coastal areas are now marred by concrete structures, reducing the natural beauty and tranquillity that once characterized Karachi’s coast. In many countries, coastal areas are developed and protected to enhance their beauty and ecological significance. Unfortunately, our government has taken a different approach by turning these coastal areas into concrete jungles.
