This letter refers to the news report ‘No decision yet on banning PTI: Dar’ (July 17). If there was no decision then why there was a need for the Information and Broadcasting Minister Attaullah Tarar to announce one prematurely and trigger yet another outcry. It appears that the ruling elite is not serious in settling any political issues even at this stage when Pakistan is struggling to keep its economy afloat and the security situation is worsening with two separate attacks martyring at least 10 troops and five civilians earlier this/last week in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The government should initiate some confidence-building measures and move away from confrontation.
With these careless announcements and steps, even if one thinks carefully and very conservatively, it looks like the government has accepted that they cannot avert an economic disaster. Reaching for unconstitutional or desperate measures like party bans smacks off the government trying to save its political legacy by creating unnecessary chaos. If this reading is indeed true, then it will be a complete betrayal and disservice to the people of Pakistan.
