The recent revelation of a leaked phone call featuring Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Chief Noor Wali Mehsud has once again highlighted the persistent threat posed by terrorist groups to Pakistan’s security and stability. In the conversation, Mehsud can be heard directing his subordinates to carry out attacks on government schools, hospitals, and the homes of police officers and soldiers, outlining a sinister plan to sow chaos and fear within our borders. This alarming development necessitates a comprehensive and resolute response from the Pakistani government, both in terms of internal measures and diplomatic actions. Pakistan’s decision to conduct a forensic analysis of the leaked phone call is a crucial first step in addressing this grave threat. The evidence attained should be instrumental in pursuing strict legal action against Noor Wali Mehsud and his accomplices, such as Ahmad Hussain Mehsud alias Ghat Haji and Saqib Gandapur, who were also implicated in the call.
However, dealing with the TTP cannot solely be a domestic battle. The presence of TTP leaders on Afghan soil, and their direct involvement in orchestrating attacks inside Pakistan, is a clear violation of international norms and must be addressed with the utmost urgency. Terrorism has left an indelible mark on every Pakistani, with tens of thousands killed or injured over the years. In the past year or two, a new wave of terrorism has gripped the country, escalating since the fall of Kabul in August 2021. Security experts had long warned the Imran Khan-led government that the Afghan Taliban could not be relied upon to bring regional stability. The resurgence of the TTP and its affiliates, successfully carrying out attacks across Pakistan, underscores the necessity for the Afghan government to prevent cross-border terrorism from Afghan soil. This remains a challenging endeavour, with the Afghan Taliban yet to fulfill their obligations. The Bannu Cantonment attack, tragically resulting in the loss of eight Pakistani soldiers, is a grim reminder of the need for robust international cooperation in dismantling terrorist networks. Pakistan’s strong demarche to the Afghan embassy, demanding decisive action against the Hafiz Gul Bahadur group and other terrorist factions, was a necessary step. The Afghan government must understand the gravity of the situation and take concrete measures to ensure its territory is not a launchpad for attacks against Pakistan.
While diplomatic efforts hold immense importance, Pakistan must simultaneously focus on strengthening its internal security apparatus. Bolstering security protocols and enhancing intelligence-gathering capabilities are crucial to impede terrorist operations and proactively neutralize threats. Fostering collaboration between various security agencies and stepping up surveillance of known terrorists and sympathizers are essential. Recent attacks highlight the need for a proactive approach that emphasizes prevention and a swift response. Confronting terrorism necessitates decisive and coordinated action on both domestic and international fronts. Pakistan can undoubtedly make significant strides within its borders, but ultimately, the fight against the TTP hinges on the Afghan Taliban cutting off all support to the group on Afghan soil. This requires not just military action but also addressing the root causes of terrorism. Dismantling the extremist ideologies that fuel these groups is a complex but necessary task. The time for procrastination is over. Pakistan’s unwavering resolve, coupled with international support and cooperation, can overcome this renewed wave of terrorism and build a safer future for its citizens. Only then can the nation truly move past the shadow of fear and chaos that terrorism seeks to cast.
