Cop martyred in Takht Bhai checkpost attack

TAKHT BHAI: A police constable embraced martyrdom and another two sustained injuries in a grenade attack on their checkpost located near the Buddhist remains here early Friday.

Sources said that suspected militants hurled a hand-grenade at the cops manning a checkpost near the Buddhist remains in Takht Bhai at around 3am. The attack also triggered an exchange of fire between the suspected militants and the cops.

One constable was martyred and another two suffered injuries in the grenade attack. An exchange of fire also took place, however, the attackers escaped unhurt. A heavy contingent of the police arrived at the spot and launched a search operation but no arrest could be made.

The martyred policeman was identified as Umar Nabi. The injured were named Shabbir Ahmad and Fayyaz Khan. The police registered the first information report of the attack on behalf of the state.Meanwhile, the funeral prayer for the slain cop was offered at the Police Lines in Mardan. Later his body was sent to his native town Lundkhwar, where he was laid to rest with state honours.
