The past month has been brutal for Pakistani animals, subjected to extreme cruelty by apathetic humans. Social media erupted over a landlord in Sindh amputating a camel's leg for foraging in his field. The video of the camel crying in pain paints a distressing picture of our society. Another incident in a village near Rawalpindi saw a donkey's ears sliced off over a land dispute.
These acts of cruelty highlight the impunity with which perpetrators brutalize animals. Existing animal protection laws are outdated and need strict implementation and updating. Extreme penalties should be enforced against those who harm animals, ensuring perpetrators cannot evade sanctions by paying fines. Additionally, the government should launch nationwide awareness campaigns to educate the public about the importance of animal welfare, the responsibilities of pet ownership, and the severe consequences of mistreatment. Authorities must act decisively to ensure the safety and protection of animals and to foster a more compassionate society.
