PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Sunday demanded the resignation of the chief election commissioner (CEC) and other members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) after the Supreme Court verdict which entitled the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to the seats reserved for women and minorities in the legislative assemblies.
In a statement, the KP government spokesman Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif said the role of the ECP in the general elections and later in the reserved seats issue was lamentable. He accused the CEC of running a campaign against the PTI which was based on his bias against and animosity towards this party.
Barrister Saif said the CEC ignored the measures which he believed were unconstitutional and violated the constitution and disrespected the court orders.Explaining his point, Barrister Saif said the ECP turned a blind eye to the caretaker setups in KP as it was the first time in history that two caretaker setups were put in place in the province.
He said the ECP deprived the PTI of the electoral symbol of the bat and forced the party to contest the general elections without its own symbol.Barrister Saif alleged that PTI faced rigging before, during and after the general elections.” But the people ensured the PTI victory in the elections despite all these high-handed tactics by the ECP,” he added.
