Considering the dearth of energy for Balochistan’s agriculture sector, a problem that afflicts farmers throughout the country, PM Shehbaz Sharif’s plan to solarize 28000 tube wells in Balochistan in order to provide its farmers with cheap electricity is a step in the right direction. The solarized tube wells will certainly help alleviate the sufferings of the people of the province and, to some extent, can help make up for some of the negligence our governments have historically shown Balochistan.
However, this initiative should not be a pretence for the government to gaslight the Baloch community and minimize their other concerns, which is something that has been going on for decades. Likewise, transparency and equitable implementation should be a priority throughout the project so that the government can keep the people’s trust. All in all, this scheme should
serve as a precedent for the government to think more about Balochistan.
