ISLAMABAD: In a major development on the murder of veteran journalist Arshad Sharif in Nairobi, Kenya, the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has sought the extradition of three key suspects involved in the assassination through Interpol, sources engaged in the investigation of the case told The News on Thursday.

Following the Kenyan high court’s ruling that held the Kenyan police responsible for the killing of Pakistani journalist, the JIT has formally requested Interpol to facilitate the extradition of Waqar Ahmed, Aamir Ahmed and Tariq Ahmed Wasi, who have been nominated in the first information report (FIR) lodged on June 12, 2022 with the Ramna police station under murder charges.

The JIT said Pakistani investigation agencies have initiated an investigation in Pakistan under Article 3 of Pakistan Penal Code of 1860.

The JIT convened a meeting in the Ministry of Interior on Thursday to review the evidence gathered so far. The team concluded that the request to Interpol was substantiated by strong evidence, enhancing the prospects of extradition. Earlier, Interpol had dismissed the request due to inadequate evidence. Arshad Sharif was tragically murdered in Nairobi, sparking a global outcry and demands for thorough investigations.
