WASHINGTON: The US Department of State on Tuesday emphasized that the US neither supports the Taliban nor provides any funding to them.
Referring to the UN report on the treatment of women and girls in Afghanistan, the department spokesperson Matthew Miller highlighted that “the unpredictable and arbitrary enforcement of the Taliban’s so-called moral oversight” undermines the human rights of all Afghanistan.
We continue to closely monitor the Taliban’s treatment of the Afghan people, especially the treatment of Afghan women and girls, he said during the daily briefing, “we expect the Taliban to honour their assurances to the Afghan people and the international community in this regard.”
He added that the US has told the Taliban representatives, in private and public, that their relationship with the international community depends entirely on their actions.
To another question, the spokesperson repeated that the Pakistani people have suffered greatly at the hands of terrorists. “We have a shared interest in combating threats to regional security, we partner with a range of Pakistani civilian institutions and regularly engage the government of Pakistan to identify opportunities to build capacity and strengthen regional security,” he said.
