This refers to the article, ‘Rethinking jirgas’ by Ayaz Ahmad (May 14). The writer has come up with an in-depth analysis of the main causes of the existence of jirgas. The root cause of honour killings and their authorisation by jirgas is our distorted beliefs and orthodox values.
The mindset that compels a person to kill in the name of honour is the major cause of honour killings. Even the fear of speedy retribution and punishment from will not deter a person from committing such acts. In addition to the reforms suggested by the writer, there is a need to create awareness among people about the rights of women.
