Maryam defends defamation law

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said Thursday the defamation law is more crucial now than ever before in Pakistan.
She made these remarks while chairing an Ittehad Bainul Muslimeen Committee meeting on Thursday.
She said, “Those who object argue that they should commit defamation without punishment. Slandering someone is a major sin. While the media is respected, no one will be allowed to discredit and slander anyone. They may criticise me as much as they want, and I don’t care.”
She said, “This law is not only for me but for everyone. If you want to make an allegation, then provide proof. If there is no proof and the allegation is made in bad faith, then they will have to account for making a false allegation.”
She thanked all scholars for supporting the defamation law. She prayed for peace and order during Muharram.
