PUTA seeks funds to pull varsities out of financial crisis
PESHAWAR: The Peshawar University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) has urged Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur and other government functionaries to allocate and release substantial funds to address the critical financial issues plaguing universities in the province.
In a press statement issued here on Thursday, PUTA emphasised the urgent need for the allocation of Rs5 billion to enable universities to fulfill their pension liabilities. Over recent years, it said, the universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been struggling with accumulating pension obligations, creating financial strain and hindering their operational capabilities. By allocating these funds, it added, the provincial government can alleviate this burden and ensure that universities can meet their financial obligations responsibly.
Additionally, the PUTA had requested for allocation of Rs12 billion in the provincial budget specifically earmarked for universities.“This allocation is essential to overcome existing deficits and empower universities to enhance their financial stability and administrative capabilities, “ it said, adding, strengthening universities financially not only ensures smooth operations but also supports academic and research excellence, contributing significantly to the overall educational landscape of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
PUTA underscored the pivotal role of the provincial government in fostering a conducive environment for higher education. By following the examples set by governments in Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government can demonstrate its commitment to prioritizing education and enabling universities to thrive, it added.
