Naqvi expects positive developments in Pakistan-India cricket ties

LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has expressed optimism about the upcoming Champions Trophy and the future of India-Pakistan cricket relations.

Talking to media here Thursday, Naqvi confirmed that Pakistan will host all matches of the Champions Trophy, while hinting at positive news regarding the participation of the Indian team in the event.

The chairman acknowledged the challenges faced in upgrading three stadiums ahead of the Champions Trophy. He emphasised the importance of maximising PCB’s revenue through ticket sales. He said that measures are being taken to discontinue the practice of free tickets, citing that PCB officials received only four tickets during the ICC World Cup.

Furthermore, Naqvi mentioned that there are promising options beyond Cricket Australia for an India-Pakistan series, suggesting that good news may be on the horizon for cricket fans eager for the revival of this historic rivalry.

Naqvi further said that the player who fulfills the fitness criteria will get the central contract. “It will be necessary for the cricketers to pass the fitness test. There will be no compromise on fitness, all the fitness tests including the Yo Yo test will have to be passed. Players who do not play domestic cricket will not be able to join the national team again.”

Naqvi said that those ex-cricketers will now take over the system whose livelihood is not speaking on different channels. Talking about the incident with Haris Rauf, Naqvi said that FIA is not after those who misbehaved with Haris Rauf. “I invite those who misbehaved with Haris Rauf to come to Pakistan soon to sort out differences.”

Naqvi emphasises measured approach to changes in team

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has made it clear that no immediate decision will be taken regarding Babar Azam’s future as the captain of Pakistan’s cricket team.

Amidst widespread speculation following Pakistan’s exit from the T20 World Cup, Naqvi emphasised the need for a measured approach to any changes within the team.

The PCB chairman confirmed that Shan Masood will continue to lead the national team for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh. This decision comes after Naqvi held a detailed video call with Masood to discuss strategies for improving the team’s performance in Test cricket.

Naqvi has been actively consulting with former players for the betterment of Pakistan cricket. One player has submitted an extensive report outlining necessary reforms. However, Naqvi remains cautious, stating that “decisions taken in haste and anger generally lead to more complications,” signaling his intent to avoid rash judgments that could further destabilise the team.
