HYDERABAD: Within a few weeks after the incident of amputation of two legs of a camel was reported from Sanghar, another apparent incident of cruelty towards an animal has been reported from Umerkot district where a camel was found dead with all of its limbs amputated.

The incident was reported on Saturday from Kunri tehsil in Umerkot where a camel was found dead on a road with all of its legs cut off.

Police and the camel’s owner reached the scene after videos of the dead camel were shared on the media.

Police called a medical team and conducted preliminary examination.

In their letter written to a veterinary officer of the livestock department, the Kunri police stated that unidentified persons had cut off four legs of a camel that was found dead on a road at Mor Jhangu Mor Chowk.

Police asked the veterinary officer to ascertain whether or not the legs of the camel were cut off while it was alive so that a case could be registered.

Umerkot SSP Asif Raza Baloch also took notice of the incident and sought an inquiry report from Kunri DSP Zain Raza Baloch.

According to the report submitted to the Umerkot SSP, the camel’s legs were cut off after it had died. The report read that the camel was ill and weak and it had died around 30 hours before it was found and there was also no signs of injuries on the animal’s body.

The owner of the camel, Abdul Rashid, said the animal was sick and had gone to graze a day ago. He said he did not want to accuse anyone.

Rashid said he owned more than 40 camels, of which all except the dead one had returned after grazing on Friday evening. He added that if the camel was killed, he did not know who was responsible for it.

Some incidents of cruelty towards animals have recently come to light from various districts of Sindh. On June 14, a landowner in Sanghar cut off a camel's legs for grazing on his land. Later, it was reported that the owner of a donkey cart tortured a donkey in Hyderabad causing multiple fractures.

The injured donkey was brought to Karachi where it died during treatment a few days later.
