MANSEHRA: The local bodies’ representatives and residents of Jarad in Kaghan valley on Friday demanded the government fill teachers’ posts lying vacant at the lone high school for girls in the area.

“We have taken the shortage of teachers issue with the high-up in the education department repeatedly but to no avail. And now we have decided to block Mansehra-Naran-Jalkhad Road to traffic in protest,” Zakir Khan, the Jarad Village Council’s chairmen, told reporters.

Flanked by a group of locals, he said that Government High School for Girls, Jarad, was facing a shortage of teachers resulting in the education of over 600 female students suffering adversely.

“Over 20 posts of teachers have been lying vacant for a long time and currently it has been run by 10 teachers and six of them have been absent from their duties for many weeks,” Khan said.

Sadaqat Ali Swati, a local, said that the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf-led government was making tall claims of education reforms in the province but nothing practical was done on the ground.“The members of national and provincial assemblies elected from the area should take this issue in both houses to ensure quality education for local schoolgirls,” he added.
