PESHAWAR: The capital city police have launched a drive against armed men roaming in luxury vehicles to bring an end to the gun culture.
An official said four people wanted by police in a number of cases were arrested in Paharipura along with automatic weapons. A luxury bulletproof vehicle was signalled by the police but the driver accelerated the speed. They were later arrested and a case was lodged against them.
There were some reports initially that one of the held persons was the nephew of an elected representative who was pressurizing police to release the accused. However, police denied it saying all four accused Naseem, Maaz, Jibran and Siddiq were held and a case was lodged against them after recovering weapons.
They were wanted by police in a number of cases in Khazana and Badaber police stations. The bulletproof vehicle had no NOC. There are a number of individuals roaming in different parts of the city in luxury vehicles escorted by armed men in two to three double cabin cars, brandishing weapons and spreading terror in the society.
The practice has increased in the last few months as police remained silent. Some of these claim to be having security issues after threats from unknown numbers.
