Cherry boom
Gilgit-Baltistan boasts several cherry varieties, each with its own unique charm and cherry farming is emerging as a major economic driver in the region, particularly in districts like Ghizer, Hunza, Kharmang and Skardu. The region’s high altitude and fertile soil create ideal conditions for growing these delicious fruits. This potential has been further amplified by the recent opening of the Chinese market to Pakistani cherries. China’s proximity is a significant advantage for Gilgit-Baltistan’s cherry industry.
With a massive market valued at $3 billion and an annual demand of 350,000 tons, China presents a lucrative opportunity for the country’s cherry growers. The cherry boom has the potential to create significant economic growth in Gilgit-Baltistan, improving livelihoods and contributing to the overall prosperity of the region.
