Cases of mob violence have become alarmingly common in Pakistan. The latest incident occurred in Swat district, where a man was brutally lynched by a frenzied mob based on unverified allegations. Neither the police nor local journalists, along with print media reports, confirmed any evidence of the deceased committing such an act. Even if there was evidence against the accused, no law permits vigilante justice. The mob has no right to act as judge, jury, and executioner. A joint investigation team has been formed by the government to probe the case. Regardless of the outcome, it is essential to address the misuse of religion. The truth must be revealed to the nation, emphasizing that mob violence is unacceptable.
The NAP, devised in December 2014, provided an effective ideological framework to combat extremism and terrorism. It banned outfits and literature promoting hatred, extremism, and terrorism. It also committed to preventing the re-emergence of proscribed organizations. Despite these efforts, Pakistan has faced a resurgence of terror attacks and militancy in recent years. While kinetic measures remain crucial, long-term solutions are equally imperative. Investing in education, creating employment opportunities, and addressing underdevelopment can mitigate extremism and hence will shrink the space for terrorists’ agendas.
