Urban poverty

Pakistan’s cities face a significant challenge when it comes to informal housing, otherwise known as ‘slums’. These densely populated areas lack proper housing, sanitation, and healthcare, impacting millions. Rapid urbanization and limited opportunities in rural areas fuel their growth. Life in these slums is harsh. Residents live in makeshift homes with little protection from the elements and face health risks due to cramped conditions and inadequate sanitation. Social and economic marginalization are additional burdens, with limited education hindering upward mobility and insecure land tenure adding to the uncertainty.

Addressing this issue requires a multi-faceted approach. Investment in affordable housing with secure tenure is crucial. Upgrading infrastructure for sanitation, clean water, and waste management is essential for public health. Educational initiatives can empower residents to break the cycle of poverty and microfinance programmes can help establish small businesses and improve livelihoods. The Orangi Pilot Project (OPP) in Karachi demonstrates the power of resident-driven initiatives. OPP has improved infrastructure, sanitation, and community organization within Orangi Town. Pakistan’s slums are a complex issue, but not an insurmountable one. By acknowledging the challenges, investing in infrastructure and social programmes, and fostering community-based solutions, Pakistan can transform these areas into spaces of opportunity and growth.
