Varsities asked to produce skilled manpower

LAHORE: Punjab University (PU) Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood has said that it is the responsibility of the universities to create skilled manpower.

He was addressing a seminar on ‘Additive Manufacturing of Biomaterials’ organised by Punjab University Office of Research Innovation & Commercialisation (ORIC) in collaboration with Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology here on Tuesday.

On this occasion, Professor of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, University of Central Michigan, USA Dr Wasim Haider, President of Pakistan Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Engineers Prof Dr Muhammad Saleem Shuja, Director Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering Prof Dr Mohsin Ali Raza, Acting Director ORIC Prof Dr Aqil Inam, Deputy Director Dr Khalid Mehmood, researchers, faculty members and students were present. In his address, Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood said that workshops, seminars and visits to industries were conducted for practical learning of PU students. He said that all resources were being used to enable the students to work in the international market. Dr Wasim Haider said that Pakistani students have to use modern technology.

Olympic Day celebrations at GCU

The Olympic Day celebrations were held at GC University Lahore, featuring a series of events organised in collaboration with the Pakistan Olympic Association and the HEC. The celebration included a tree plantation ceremony and an Olympic walk from the GCU Main Tower to the Main Gate, emphasising environmental sustainability and the Olympic spirit.

The event was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Shazia Bashir, who planted a tree outside the University’s Sports Hall. Several Olympians, including Secretary General of the Pakistan Olympic Association Muhammad Khalid Mehmood and Olympian Manzoor-ul-Hassan Sr., also participated in the tree plantation and walk, highlighting the significance of the event in promoting sports and environmental awareness in Pakistan. In her address, Prof Dr Shazia Bashir emphasised that these celebrations not only commemorated Olympic Day but also underscored our commitment to eco-friendly initiatives.

‘The participation of renowned Olympians and sports officials signifies the importance of promoting sports and environmental sustainability in Pakistan,’ she stated. She also encouraged students to work hard and make a name for themselves in sports. The Olympic Walk, which began at the GCU Main Tower and concluded at the Main Gate, saw enthusiastic participation from students and faculty members. Directors of sports from various private and public sector universities also participated in the walk, reflecting the collaborative spirit of the event.

Officers visit GCU

A delegation of 11 senior officers participating in the Senior Management Course visited GCU Lahore. The delegation was welcomed by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Shazia Bashir, along with other senior faculty members. The participants, led by Faculty Adviser Aamir Fayyaz, were briefed about the history and management of GCU. Dean Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Prof Dr Babar Aziz, Additional Registrar Dr Shoukat Ali, and Political Science Department Chairperson Prof Dr Fouzia Ghani were also present.

Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Shazia Bashir highlighted the institution's significant role in promoting academic excellence and contributing to societal development over the years. GCU's Director of Academic Planning and External Links, Dr Fouzia Shaheen, delivered a presentation on GCU's infrastructure, academic life, research endeavours, and management practices.
