A large number of donkey participated in the Commissioner Karachi Donkey Cart Race on Sunday that starting at the ICI Bridge and ending at the Commissioner Office on Club Road.
Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab attended the event as the chief guest and distributed prizes among the winners. According to a press statement issued by the Commissioner Office, donkey cart owner Abdul Khalid secured the first position, Muhammad Javed the second position, and Shahjehan, alias Durga, the third position.
The mayor praised the event stating that donkey cart racing was part of Karachi's old culture and heritage. He also appreciated the love of the people of Lyari for sports and their efforts to preserve their cultural heritage.
Wahab expressed his commitment to providing opportunities for youth to engage in positive activities through sports. He hailed the donkey cart race as a cherished aspect of Karachi's cultural heritage, praising the people of Lyari for keeping this tradition alive despite economic challenges.
The donkey cart race was inaugurated by Additional Commissioner Syed Ghulam Mehdi who waved the flag to start the race at the ICI Bridge. Addressing the ceremony, Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi stressed the need for promoting sports activities in Karachi that would provide positive activities to the city's youth.
The donkey cart race was held as part of the Commissioner Karachi Sports Festival, which also includes a hockey tournament on June 25 at the Islahuddin Landi Kotal Ground in North Nazimabad, a girls basketball tournament on June 26, a shooting ball tournament on June 29 at the Korangi No 5 Shooting Ball Court, and a cycle race on the morning of June 30 at the Mazar-e-Quaid. The boys basketball tournament will be held on June 30 at 9pm at the Arambagh.
