The UIT University (UITU) was established vide The UIT University Act, 2017 (Sindh Act No. XXXIV of 2018) of Government of Sindh and published vide notification in The Sindh Government Gazette on May 28, 2018. The University after due charter inspections by HEC, granted NOC whereby UITU has been initially allowed to start undergraduate programs in four departments namely, Electrical Engineering, Management Sciences, Computer Science and Social Sciences. The UIT University is managed by Usman Memorial Foundation (UMF).
The Usman Memorial Foundation was established in 1973 in memory of Late Mohammad Usman, the eldest brother of the Hasham family – a prominent business conglomerate of Pakistan that owns a group of companies, including Mehran Sugar, Unicol, Unifood, etc, who had an untimely episode with life in February, 1973. Mr A.K. Brohi served as the first President, while Dr Manzoor Ahmad was the Secretary General of the Foundation.
In order to pay tribute to late Usman’s keen interest in community education and the student fraternity at large, the UMF comprising family members, friends and well-wishers of late Mohammad Usman, took a philanthropic initiative by establishing Usman Institute of Technology (UIT) in 1994 at a plot allotted to the Foundation at Abul Hasan Isphahani Road. The Hasham Family sponsored the development of the Institute. UIT upholds the noble mission of service above self in furthering the cause of higher education. The Institute has now grown over the years, earning accolades in various projects run under the supervision and guidance of the Board of Governors and able and experienced heads.
Initially, UIT was a constituent institution of Hamdard University and later in 2015 it got affiliation with NED University of Engineering and Technology (NEDUET). It is recognised by HEC as an affiliate of NED and its engineering programmes are accredited by Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) and its Computer Science and Software Engineering Programmes are accredited by HEC’s National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC). Recently, PEC awarded OBE Level II under the Washington Accord to all UIT’s Electrical Engineering programs. The OBE Level II made UIT graduates eligible for getting direct work visas for the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It has produced more than 4,000 professionals who are gainfully employed in the industry. Some of the graduates owned a company as entrepreneurs and many serving on a responsible position in local and multinational companies. It has over 1,500 students currently studying and nearly 170 employees.
The University's existing campus is situated in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi, on the main University Road. The main campus spread over 10 acres is under construction in the Malir District. The University’s facility is constructed over 108,000 square feet. The University has 12 classrooms, 22 Labs, a Library, a state-of-the-art Auditorium with the capacity to accommodate 200 persons, Halls / Meeting Areas of different sizes, offices, Cafeteria, Sports and other facilities. UIT’s library & LRC is a serene, well–stocked, air conditioned, and fully computerised library, which serves as a catalyst in the learning process.
UIT has gained this status due to maintaining a good and consistent standard of education and keeping its focus on engineering and technology. The University is open to all applicants who are academically qualified for admission to the programs of study offered by the University and no such person shall be denied the privileges of the University on the grounds only of gender, religion, colour, creed, race, class or domicile.
