ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) again delisted the PTI’s intra-party election case on the eve of hearing, fixed for June 6 (today), owing to unavailability of full bench.

“It is circulated for the information of general public and litigants that the following case fixed for hearing before the Honourable Election Commission of Pakistan on 06.06.2024 has been delisted due to non-availability of full bench and next date of hearing will be announced later,” says a delisting notice issued here.

Previously, the hearing of the case was scheduled for May 30, but was not held due to the same reason and now again, the matter could not be taken up. Notices have been issued to PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and federal chief election commissioner Raoof Hasan for the Thursday’s hearing. The PTI had conducted the last intra-party elections on March 3 and next day, submitted the documents to the Election Commission for issuance of the certificate, being a legal requirement for election symbol.

Contrary to the development, however, according to the cause list, issued by the Election Commission, the four-member bench, headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, will hold regular hearing in the three identical applications, filed by PMLN legislators from the Islamabad Capital Territory for transfer of the pending petitions to some other election tribunal.

There is only one election tribunal available for Islamabad, which has held hearing into the election petitions, filed by PTI-backed candidates, Muhammad Ali Bokhari, Shoaib Shaheen and Aamir Mughal against the poll victories of their PMLN rivals Anjum Aqeel, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry and Raja Khurram Nawaz. They have alleged gross poll irregularities and manipulation of the election results.

The ruling party lawmakers had filed three identical applications in the Election Commission for transfer of their rivals’ petitions, having expressed apprehensions that they would not get justice from the existing election tribunal. The Election Commission took up their applications on June 4 for hearing, reserved its verdict and issued a two-page order the same day to hold regular hearing and fixed June 6 for this purpose. The Election Commission has directed the election tribunal to submit the related record relating to the case.
