LAHORE: Former president Dr Arif Alvi has said the need of hour is to return people’s mandate back to people and heal the wounds of the nation.
Talking to media during his visit to the Punjab Assembly here on Monday, he said he was conveying to the military hierarchy that military trials would damage the repute of the institution. He said he met political workers against whom there were no videos but they had to spend months in jail. Under the prevailing circumstances, it is necessary to restore peace and stability. Three main demands today are the rule of law, release of the PTI founder and return of people’s mandate to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
Alvi said he was optimistic and would continue his struggle for the truth and right. To a question, he said: “The Hamoodur Rehman Commission Report pertains to our judiciary and military and the civilians and politicians should learn from it. We need to move ahead instead of debating a treason case. It is time to come out of the confrontational mode.” He paid tribute to the institution of judiciary for siding with the law.
Senior PTI leader Azam Swati also spoke on the occasion and said the rule of law was vital for strengthening the country’s economy. He said the solution to prevailing issues lied in quashing of cases against PTI founder Imran Khan. He condemned the Election Commission of Pakistan for alleged massive rigging in the general elections.
