Gujranwala facing severe traffic problems
From Our Correspondent
GUJRANWALA: Gujranwala, which is known as a big industrial city of the country, is facing severe traffic problems while construction of Aziz Crossing flyover has added to the problem, causing traffic jam on GT Road.
The situation has created tension for the people, especially during school timings when it is so difficult for them to reach their destinations timely. Traffic remains jammed for hours on almost all main inter-city roads during the peak hours. Hospital Road where a large number of government and private educational institutions are located witnesses traffic jam daily. Another reason from traffic jams is motorcycle-rickshaws. There are thousands of rickshaws, providing transport facilities to the passengers, but they have become headache for traffic police and the RTA. The violation of traffic rules and frequent traffic jams are witnessed despite the presence of two traffic control systems. They are traffic warden system and traffic police system being run under the supervision of the chief traffic officer (CTO) and three DSPs (traffic) but both the systems have reportedly failed to control traffic. The industrial city is in a dire need of an effective plan to overcome the traffic mess and to check the traffic rules’ violation.
According to the people, all traffic signals are out-of-order in the city. The people allege that traffic policemen do not pay any heed to regulate traffic on roads.
When contacted, traffic police spokesman Umer Mirza said that despite shortage of staff, they were trying their best to resolve the traffic problems. He said that due to construction the flyover, a number of traffic wardens had been deputed there to control traffic. He said that they were unable to control rising violation of traffic rules due to shortage of staff.
