No let-up in street crime in Karachi despite central jail getting filled with accused

Nearly 6,000 suspected criminal elements were imprisoned in Central Jail Karachi in five months of ongoing year

KARACHI: Despite the fact that nearly 6,000 suspected criminal elements were imprisoned in the Central Jail Karachi in the five months of the ongoing year, the street crime incidence in the city has not decreased.

From January till May 2024, a total of 5,881 accused were put behind bars in the central prison. April was the month when the largest number of accused, 1,371, was incarcerated in the prison.

The Central Jail Karachi has been filled with inmates due to the acceleration in operations against criminal elements by the law enforcement agencies. As per the data obtained on May 21, the central prison had 6,933 inmates who included 5,881 persons that were incarcerated this year.

A total of 1,195 suspects were sent to the jail in January this year, 1,029 in February, 1,287 in March, 1,371 in April and 999 prisoners between May 1 and 21.

Meanwhile, a total of 3,211 prisoners were also released from the jail due to acquittals or bail. Of them, 805 were freed in January, 671 in February, 753 in March and 674 in April. A total of 308 jail inmates were freed from May 1 till May 21.

The statistics of the children’s jail in Landhi are not included in this data.

Despite a noticeable increase in incarceration, street crime incidents in the city continue and everyday many citizens get mugged by robbers.
