Severe heatwave continues to bake most parts of Sindh

A severe heatwave continued for another day in most parts of Sindh on Wednesday with Jacobabad experiencing the maximum rise in the temperature in the last 24 hours.

The mercury level increased to 51 degrees Centigrade in Jacobabad. Dadu, with a maximum temperature of 50.5°C, ranked second on the list of cities and towns in Sindh experiencing extremely hot weather. Khairpur experienced 50.1 degrees Centigrade as the maximum mercury level, the maximum temperature in Larkana and Mohenjodaro remained 50 degrees Centigrade, Shaheed Benazirabad recorded 49.2 degrees Centigrade, Rohri 49 degrees, Sukkur 48.5 degrees, and Sakrand and Padidan both experienced 47.5 degrees Centigrade of maximum temperature in the last 24 hours.

In areas of lower Sindh, the maximum temperature in Hyderabad remained 47.5 degrees Centigrade, 45.8 degrees in Badin, 45.5 degrees in Tando Jam, 45 degrees in Chhor, while Mithi sizzled with 44 degrees Centigrade of maximum temperature.

The maximum temperature in Karachi remained 41.5 degrees Centigrade with 54 per cent humidity. According to the heatwave alert issued by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), heatwave conditions in most parts of the province, as per the forecast of the Pakistan Meteorological Department, are likely to persist till June 1.

The cities and towns of Kambar Shahdadkot, Larkana, Jacoabad, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Ghotki, Khairpur, Naushahro Feroze, Shaheed Benazirabad, could experience six to eight degrees above the normal daytime mercury level in the coming days. As per the alert issued by the PDMA, the heatwave might intensify in areas of Karachi, Thatta, Badi, and Sujawal districts till June 1.

The PDMA has asked the deputy commissioners posted in various districts of the province to take special precautionary measures to ensure the health, well-being, and safety of people especially senior citizens, women, and children amid persistent harsh weather in most parts. The deputy commissioners have been asked to establish special makeshift centres at government hospitals and public health facilities to deal with emergency cases of heatstroke to prevent fatalities.
