CTD SSP removed from post after officials found involved in kidnapping for ransom
Taking serious notice of the abduction of the nephew of a paramilitary force official, Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon has ordered suspension of police officials involved in the abduction and ordered the registration of an FIR.
Officials said the Sindh police chief removed two Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) officers from their posts over the charges of kidnapping the nephew of a Rangers officer in the CTD Civil Lines, and charging him with association with the Zainabyun Brigade.
They also demanded ransom for the release of the kidnapped man. The IGP also directed CTD DIG Asif Ijaz Shaikh to prepare a comprehensive report and submit it to the Sindh chief minister and home minister.
After the initial investigations, the Sindh police chief ordered suspension of the CTD DSP and SHO in the case of kidnapping for ransom of a man, Aliyan. The CTD SSP was removed from the post.
The complainant, a Rangers official, narrated that on May 19, his nephew reached Karachi from Iraq and left for Sohrab Goth to go to Punjab. When he was at the Sharea Faisal’s Wireless Gate, he was stopped by plainclothes officials and taken away.
The kidnappers disclosed their connection with the CTD and in exchange for his release, demanded a ransom of Rs1.5 million. The matter was settled for Rs100,000. The complainant took the money to the CTD office where he met his nephew. In the meantime, his fellow Rangers officials came to his help.
The kidnappers were identified as Sub-Inspector Tahir Tanveer, ASI Shahid Hussain, Constable Umar Khan and a private man, Osama. Of them, Tanveer and Hussain were arrested on the spot and the others were arrested later.
Officials said the IGP took notice of the incident and went to the office of the CTD where he sought details from the DIG CTD and his subordinate officers. Suspended CTD SHO Imdad Khawaja said in his statement that SSP Imran Shaukat was aware of the detention of Aliyan upon suspicion of his association with the Zainabyoun Brigade.
CTD Operation DSP Sohail Akhtar Saheliri was appointed on May 20. He was unaware of Aliyan. SSP Shaukat issued a notification for the suspension of CTD SHO Imdad Khawaja.
After this, the IGP issued a notification for the removal of SSP Shaukat from his post and he was told to report to the Central Police Office. A notification was also issued for the suspension of DSP Saheliri. Additional IG CTD and Acting Karachi Police Chief Imran Yaqoob Minhas has appointed Inspector Raja Abdul Razzaq as the CTD SHO.
