A police inspector from the Criminal Investigation Agency (CIA) was apprehended red-handed while accepting extortion money on Saturday.
During a sting operation, the Sindh anti-corruption department arrested Inspector Abid Ali of the CIA police while he was in the act of accepting Rs100,000.
According to anti-corruption officials, Inspector Abid had already extorted Rs3 million from an individual named Adnan, who had recently arrived in Karachi from Dubai with intentions to relocate to Europe on March 25.
Adnan was subsequently abducted from a private hotel in Saddar on the night of April 7. Inspector Abid Ali had been demanding money from Adnan's family.
Officials stated that when the demanded amount was not forthcoming, Adnan was arrested on April 19 from Hub River Road and placed in custody. After obtaining Rs3 million from Adnan's family, a further demand of Rs800,000 was made. Following the acceptance of a bribe amounting to Rs100,000, the police inspector was apprehended by the anti-corruption department. A case has been registered.
