PESHAWAR: The capital city police busted an international gang involved in smuggling of antiques and arrested its key members, officials said on Friday.
The senior superintendent of police operations Kashif Zulfiqar along with director museum and archeology, Abdul Samad, told reporters that the gang was smuggling antiques that were centuries old.
The SSP said the held key member of the gang, Sher Wali, disclosed about other members of his ring. He said the accused told police that he had smuggled antiques many times in the past.
The Paharipura Police Station a day earlier had recovered antiquities worth millions of rupees that included two statues believed to be hundreds of years old.The officials said the statues and other antiques were being smuggled to China.
The director of museums told reporters that a case has been registered against the accused while further investigations are going on to arrest other members of the ring. Meanwhile, the cops of the Gulbahar Police Station and the Gulfat Hussain Shaheed Police Station busted gangs of street criminals and recovered eight lifted motorbikes and phones sets during different actions.
