Hyderabad: Rallies were held outside the Hyderabad Press Club on Wednesday to mark Labour Day that is observed worldwide on May 1.

Participants of the rallies raised slogans for the rights of workers.

The rallies were organised by the United Labour Federation, Central Peace Committee for Interfaith Harmony, WAPDA Hydro Union and other organisations. A large number of men and women took part in the rallies and lamented that wages were not being given to workers during inflation in the country.

Speakers at the rallies said the employment of citizens was not even protected, and comprehensive policies should be made to ensure the rights of workers in the country.

Meanwhile, on the eve of Labour Day, the Sindh Community Foundation in collaboration with the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network, Feed The Minds and Indigo Textile held a women workers' convention with the theme ‘Social Justice and Decent Work for All’ in Matiari. More than 200 women cotton workers gathered at the convention and underscored the fundamental principles of equality and dignity in the workplace.

Matiari Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Yousif Sheikh, climate activist and head of Sindh Community Foundation Javed Hussain, Zubaida Thaheem and Rafiq Jamali from the social welfare department, Mashooq Ali Memon from the Directorate of Labour Hyderabad region, women rights activists Shahnaz Sheedi, and cotton workers Zubaida Machi and Noorbano Majeedano were among the speakers.
