Sindh to partner with Unesco for undersea exploration of Bhambore ruins
The Sindh government in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) will soon launch a project for the emergency protection of the world-renowned archaeological sites of Mohejo-Daro, Makli and Bhambore in the province.
Sindh Minister for Culture, Tourism and Archives Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah stated this onThursday while meeting a two-member UNESCO delegation comprising archaeologists from Italy. He informed the delegation that the Sindh government in partnership with Unesco would launch a project of undersea exploration of Bhambore ruins in Thatta district.
He said the Sindh government would get assistance from archaeology experts from around the world to undertake the emergency protection works for the preservation of the heritage and archaeological sites in the province.
He said the historical and ancient sites in Sindh would be promoted all over the world as per the vision of Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to attract foreign visitors to the tourist destinations in the province.
Dr Christina, who was part of the delegation, said the Makli necropolis in Thatta had a prominent place among ancient and heritage sites all over the world. She said the archaeological ruins in Sindh received phenomenal attention from the concerned archaeologists all over the world.
She mentioned that traces of weapons and armour had not been found in any of the archaeological ruins in Sindh showing that people in this region were historically peace-loving and did not like wars and violence.
She assured the Sindh culture minister that Unesco would extend maximum support to the provincial government for protection of the archaeological sites in Sindh. The meeting was also attended by Sindh Culture and Tourism Secretary Khalid Chachar, Sindh Tourism Development Corporation Managing Director Feyaz Shah, Sindh Archaeology Director Abdul Fateh Sheikh and other senior officials.
