KARACHI: The federal government on Saturday completely rejected reports that any proposal is under consideration to amend the Constitution to ensure that every chief justice of Pakistan serves for a three-year term.

The unequivocal denial from the federal government came after a private television news channel quoted sources as saying that a proposal was being considered for giving the chief justice of Pakistan a three-year tenure, and if the proposal was accepted, an amendment to the Constitution would have to be introduced. The report also said the CJP’s tenure is otherwise linked to age.

Appearing on Geo News to comment on the news reports about fixing the CJP’s service tenure, Federal Information Minister Attatullah Tarar said that there was no such proposal under the federal government’s consideration nor had he seen any such document in this regard.

Tarar said that it was highly inappropriate to air such news merely based on speculation.

“Neither is any such proposal under consideration by the government nor any discussion has taken place in this regard,” he emphasized.

He said it was inappropriate to even comment on such reports based on mere speculation. He advised the public not to pay attention to such baseless reports.

Tarar said that it was undue on the part of certain TV news channels and social media to air such baseless reports when no discussion at any level of the government had taken place to consider any such proposal.

Meanwhile, when contacted by senior Geo News correspondent Abdul Qayyum Siddiqui, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said that he didn’t like to even comment on such non-serious and fake news reports.

He said that such a proposal could never come under consideration when even the parliament is not complete. “It seems that a private TV news channel has no agenda other than spreading fake news,” the minister was quoted as saying.
