The surge in food prices during the ongoing month of Ramazan underscores a significant failure on the part of authorities to rein in profiteering and hoarding mafias. Despite the deployment of thousands of administrative officers, it is disheartening to note that their primary focus appears to be self-preservation rather than enhancing bureaucratic efficiency. The public’s rising disenchantment with democratic procedures and governmental institutions has been exacerbated by this worrying trend.
Although the PM’s Ramazan relief package is a commendable endeavour, its effectiveness is yet to be determined. While the provision of subsidized food items through utility stores, the Benazir Income Support Programme, and mobile units is commendable, doubts persist regarding fair distribution, especially at the local level. To restore public confidence in the system, immediate action is needed to eradicate all types of exploitation and profiteering.
