This refers to the news report ‘PML-N committed to abolishing NAB: Irfan Siddiqi’ (Mar 12). Senator Irfan Siddiqui, a stalwart of the PML-N, says that his party’s manifesto carries the proposed abolition of both the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and caretaker governments. In my view, abolishing caretaker governments from our constitution would be a fine, rather commendable, step. I feel it is important that the onus of conducting a general election should rest on the shoulders of the sitting government. The governments (federal and provincial) should be well supported and guided by a fiercely independent and competent senior judiciary and the Election Commission of Pakistan.
The proposal to dissolve NAB is rather controversial. While the organization is not a 100-per cent success story, it is not a complete failure as well. If we abolish NAB, which institution will be tasked to rein in the tide of corruption and corrupt practices in political forces and bureaucracy? We cannot allow corruption to become rampant once again in our already weakened society. Therefore, we should think carefully before we dissolve NAB.
