KARACHI: Syeda Shehla Raza was elected the first woman president in the history of Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF).
Shehla Raza was elected by the PHF Congress members in a meeting held in Karachi on Tuesday, Apart from Congress, members of PHF affiliated departments also participated in the meeting. PHF Congress members unanimously elected Shehla Raza as President for the remainder of the term. PHF Congress unanimously elected Shuja Iqbal Raja as Finance Secretary.
An extraordinary meeting of PHF was held at a hotel in Karachi in which 54 PHF Congress members participated. The meeting was convened by Secretary PHF Haider Hussain. In the meeting, the scrutiny of hockey clubs and the PHF election process were also approved as per the recommendations of the Prime Minister of Pakistan. A five-member committee constituted for the process of scrutiny of hockey clubs, was also approved.
The meeting also approved measures to encourage hockey in schools and colleges and clubs. Shehla thanked the PHF members and said that she is well aware of the problems of hockey, but will formulate a comprehensive strategy.
Shehla also announced the appointment of Olympian Samiullah Khan as an advisor to the President of PHF while instructing the scrutiny committee to complete the process of scrutiny in two months. It is pertinent to mention here that another group is running PHF whose president is Tariq Bugti. This group has also called its meeting in Islamabad.
