This letter refers to the editorial ‘How to deal with the world’ (March 14, 2024). In my view, the PML-N leadership appears to have made another gamble in order to accommodate a relative. Ever since the PDM government days, the PML-N appears to have wasted its political acumen. Their blunders during that period likely played a role in their rather disappointing results in this year’s elections. As if this lesson was not enough, they have now made Ishaq Dar foreign minister.
His qualifications do not meet the requirements of this ministry at all. Pakistan should have appointed someone with no previous baggage and with qualifications commensurate with this very important position. A foreign minister is the outward face of the country. Being a finance man, it seems inevitable that FM Dar will encroach on the finance ministry’s domain as it is his natural expertise. The foreign ministry will have a very difficult time under his leadership and the finance ministry will find it difficult to escape his shadow.
