Maryam launches IT, education initiatives

The chief minister underscored the need for a comprehensive plan in consultation with the management of these universities

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has set in motion several development projects aimed at transforming Lahore into a hub of innovation and education, as well as enhancing cleanliness across the province.

In a meeting held on Tuesday, Maryam Nawaz directed immediate commencement of the IT, education and film city projects in Lahore. She emphasised provision of business opportunities to leading IT companies worldwide in the IT City of Lahore, expressing satisfaction at the commitment from companies like Microsoft and Oracle to establish offices there. Furthermore, she instructed authorities to extend invitations to major Chinese IT firms for office setups in Lahore. Additionally, plans were discussed for the establishment of campuses of renowned international universities in the Education City in Lahore, catering to students from all over Pakistan.

The chief minister underscored the need for a comprehensive plan in consultation with the management of these universities.

Furthermore, she approved the launch of a free Wi-Fi pilot project in Lahore, with plans to initially implement it in educational institutions, airports, railway stations and bus stands. The project aims to provide free Wi-Fi at 10 locations within the next two weeks, with a total of 516 locations planned for coverage.

In another initiative, Maryam Nawaz announced the launch of the “Clean Punjab” Model Pilot Project in Jhelum, Jhang, Vehari and Bahawalnagar, aimed at making these cities model examples of cleanliness.

She directed the development of a sustainable model for solid waste management in both urban and rural areas.

Furthermore, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives in a building collapse in Multan, she extended her condolences and sought an immediate report from the authorities.

In a separate meeting with US Consul General Kristin K. Hawkins, discussions focused on enhancing economic cooperation and increasing scholarship opportunities for Pakistani students in American higher education institutions. The need for joint efforts to address climate change was also highlighted.

Moreover, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif made a surprise visit to Johar Town Model Bazaar, interacting with shoppers and reviewing the prices of fruits and vegetables. She assured the public of her commitment to addressing their concerns and ensuring their welfare.
