In response to the call of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder, protests were held against alleged rigging in last month’s general elections at various localities of Karachi on Sunday.
Demonstrations were held at the North Nazimabad Hyderi Market, Liaquatabad, the VIP gate of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s mausoleum, Sher Shah and Korangi No. 2½, and they were participated in by PTI leaders and workers.
Haleem Adil Sheikh, Raja Azhar and other PTI leaders addressed the rallies, condemning the allegedly illegal arrest of their party founder, and vowing to continue their struggle against purported electoral fraud.
Sheikh accused the government of resorting to unconstitutional measures. He also claimed that those who betray the PTI would not be forgiven by the nation. He said that their seats have been snatched, but their supporters are standing strong. He demanded action under Article 6 against the chief election commissioner for his alleged involvement in rigging.
The PTI leader said they would continue their fight until the party founder’s release, warning that the current government would face a strong opposition from the PTI and its allies. He announced that the party would hold a large public gathering in the city immediately after Eidul Fitr to intensify their efforts against those accused of rigging.
Muttahida responds
Members of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) in the Provincial Assembly of Sindh responded to the allegations levelled against them by PTI leaders, questioning how those declared ineligible through the Result Transmission System in the 2018 general elections are accusing the MQM-P.
Describing the May 9 incident as the worst event in eastern Pakistan, the MQM-P argued that associating a political party with a group of admirers is a mockery of politics.
They said the PTI should first cleanse itself of anti-state elements before criticising others, as is evident from their attempts to manipulate innocent people for their condemned political objectives.
Referring to the PTI founder’s unfulfilled promise of Rs1.1 trillion made to the residents of Karachi, the MQM-P asserted that there is no document to show this commitment.
They said that over the past decade, apart from the watch theft, the PTI has failed to make any notable achievements, including during the nearly three years it was in the federal government. They also said that the dream of taking the state hostage during the 2024 general elections has become a laughing stock.
The MQM-P distinguishes itself as the only party that, under its leadership, exemplifies unwavering patriotism, a unique example not found in Pakistan’s political history, they added. They urged the PTI’s unserious leaders to set name-calling aside and contribute positively to strengthening Pakistan’s state, economy and democracy.
