LAHORE: In a significant development, the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) have jointly nominated Mohsin Naqvi, Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and former interim Punjab chief minister, a candidate for the senatorial elections scheduled for March 14.
If elected senator, Mohsin Naqvi is expected to assume a pivotal role in the federal government, aligning with the decisions taken by the alliance parties. For now, sources say, Naqvi is likely to be appointed adviser to the prime minister on interior affairs. Sources familiar with the situation indicate that Rana Mehmoodul Hassan is set to be the senatorial candidate from Punjab, reinforcing the collaborative approach between the PMLN and PPP.
The decision to nominate Mohsin Naqvi for the senatorial elections and subsequently offer him significant responsibility in the federal government underscores the importance of his role and experience on the political landscape.
Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, a key figure in the coalition, has reportedly placed a condition on the leadership of the alliance parties to ensure Mohsin Naqvi’s unopposed election as senator. This strategic move is likely to bring experienced leadership to the forefront, consolidating efforts for effective governance and representation at the federal level. According to Geo News, Naqvi would continue to hold the PCB office.
