Wheat growers complain of gunny bags shortage
From Our Correspondent
MULTAN: Wheat growers have complained of shortage of gunny bags.
Talking to The News here on Friday, Pakistan Kisan Ittehad leader Chaudhry Muhammad Anwar alleged that the farmers were not being entertained properly at wheat procurement centres in south Punjab. He said that the wheat growers had been suffering since the government announced schedule for distribution of gunny bags in the province. He said that the wheat procurement centres were only issuing 100 gunny bags on daily basis to the growers. The rest of the stock was distributed among the traders and middlemen, he added. He further alleged that the wheat procurement drive was benefiting the middlemen. He said that the farmers would forcefully close the wheat procurement centres if they failed to provide relief to them. The Pakistan Kisan Ittehad leader accused the Patwaris of tempering with the revenue record at least two months before the start of wheat harvesting. He said: “The Patwaris have tempered with the record by showing traders as cultivators.” He said that the growers were forced to sell their crop at the rate of Rs 1,100 instead of Rs 1,300 fixed by the government due to which they were suffering huge losses.
Pakistan Kisan Ittehad president Khalid Khokhar said that the wheat procurement centres had failed to provide relief to the growers. He alleged that the gunny bags were being given to the influential people. He warned the government of blocking roads against the wrong distribution of gunny bags.
