Our ruling elite needs to set its priorities. Instead of initiating mega projects and big budget enterprises, they need to target the problems and issues faced by the general public – ie, corruption, terrorism, absence of justice, health, education, unemployment and inflation, and above all, the provision of clean water/unadulterated food products.
If funds are still left after overcoming all these problems, then the rulers should press ahead with their pet projects. Lastly, they should make sincere efforts towards getting rid of the begging bowl. The debt trap may prove to be the last nail in our coffin.

The Punjab government’s initiatives like metro-bus projects in Lahore and Rawalpindi are praiseworthy. In addition, the ongoing Lahore Orange Line Metro Train project shows the government’s firm resolve to upgrade the infrastructure of the provincial metropolis to the standards prevailing in developed world.
Likewise, the proposed construction of the expressway on GT Road is also a welcome step. The expressway will go a long way in easing the flow of traffic. These projects are necessary for the socioeconomic development of the country.
