PESHAWAR: Having nine seats each, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUIF) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) are vying for the office of the opposition leader in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly which has 145 members.
The leaders of both parties consider they have the right to the slot. It would, however, be the discretion of the speaker to choose anyone from them for the office. The former chief minister and leader of the JUIF, Akram Khan Durrani, is, considered a favourite candidate for the position.
Dr Ibadullah Khan, a two-time former MNA and brother of the provincial president of PMLN Engineer Ameer Muqam, is also seen as a candidate for the office. There is no such wrangling for the office between the two parties. Despite that both parties think the office should be given to the representatives of their respective parties.
